About The Needles
The Needles district of Canyonlands National Park is characterized by pinnacles of red sandstone. Towering red cliffs surround it on the east and south while on the west the Colorado River, deep in its gorge, forms an impassable boundary.
Sediments deposited on the floor of an ancient sea once covered this area to the tops of the cliffs. The mighty force of erosion has carved out all this terrain, leaving mesas, the needles and many other stone formations.
Utah Route 211 enters the Needles from U. S. Highway 191 to the east, through a cliff-lined canyon.
